Welcome...In 1995, a parish priest asked the Missionary School to bring the experience of traditional Orthodox Christian life to his local area. As a result of this request, the Missionary School began developing its Family Conferences. The goal was to structure a six-day event where every member of the family, young or old, married or single, could be engaged in the life of piety of the Orthodox Church. Through liturgical prayer, inspiring lectures, children's activities and heartwarming Christian fellowship, the conference would be a time of spiritual renewal for the whole family. Today's Family Conference attempts to recreate the traditional spirit of the early apostolic church as stated in Acts 2:42: And they continued steadfastly in the apostle's doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. The conference develops this spirit by setting up an "orthodox village" atmosphere at a retreat center or camp facility with the church at the center. All activities revolve around the daily cycle of services. Daily Orthodox educational programs for the adults, youth, and children are offered, as well as common dining with spiritual readings, family recreational activities, guest lecturers, slide shows, and community talent night with music, drama, folk-dancing and contributions from those attending. Everyone participates in some way with the food preparation, serving, and washing dishes. Parents help with the children's programs. Confession and Divine Liturgy are usually offered during the conference. On the last day, everyone packs up and gathers for a final travel blessing, having their cars sprinkled with Holy Water. Because of the somewhat isolated setting, those attending can participate in the activities of the Family Conference without distraction from the usual pressures of daily life. It provides an uplifting experience as everyone develops relationships and a sense of community with other Orthodox Christians who are struggling to live out their Orthodox faith in the American culture. This is the Missionary School's ninth year to offer Family Conferences. We continue to develop the Family Conferences in different areas of the country.
